Thank You.

I've had a wonderful year and I hope you have too.  However, it's time to put the garden to bed, so Rose Cottage Garden has gone into semi-hibernation until spring.

However, if you need fresh carrots, white-fleshed sweet potatoes, chard, parsley, garlic, kohlrabi,  pickled beets, grape jelly, bread & butter pickles or zucchini mustard relish over the next few weeks please give me a call (I'm in the phone book) and I'll be happy to fill your order.

Thank you for supporting Rose Cottage Garden and for helping to make my small enterprise a success.  Look for the colourful blue sign at the side of the road next spring when once again I'll be ready to provide most of your fresh produce needs, organically grown, at excellent prices.

Have a safe and healthy winter.

Growing conditions have been perfect throughout the month of August and the vegetables have never been better.  Why not stop by on Saturday to see for yourself?

Value added:  Small jars (250 ml) of pickled beets (red or white).  Save yourself the time and trouble of doing your own - only $ 2.50 per jar, and if you like them you can buy the larger jars that will be available later in September.  If you don't like them, no worries - you haven't wasted very much money.

Broccoli (small but tight heads) @ $ 1.00 each
Cabbage @ $ 2.00 each

Never-Ending Harvest

Saturday August 11th
8:00 a.m. until sold out

Dill @ $ 1.00 per bunch
Mint @ $ 1.00 per bunch
Curly basil @ $ 2.00 per bag

Celery @ $ 2.00 per head

And there will be other surprises, I'm pretty sure of that.

Special Note:  I know I'm not very good at pricing but I also know that everything grown on my property is grown following the principles of organic cultivation: absolutely no pesticides, chemical fertilizers or herbicides have ever been used, and any horse manure applied to specific beds was (a) aged, and (b) mixed into the soil more than 90 days from first harvest.

I also know that my prices are far lower than can be found at retail grocery stores.  For example, this week celery at Sobeys is  $2.69,  lettuce ranges from $ 1.49 to $ 2.99 depending on type (and mine is nicer), chard is $ 2.99, turnip (and these are from storage turnips, not this year's stock) is $  .79 per pound, cabbage is
$  .99 per pound, and green and yellow beans are  $2.99 per pound.

My prices are low because I'm new to agriculture and I need to prove to my clientele that I am able to provide a reasonable variety of fresh produce.  Yes, I have been approached to move my retail business to the Antigonish Farmer's Market, but I would prefer to remain in my own neighbourhood and provide what I believe is a valuable service to my neighbours.

I hope to see you all this Saturday.  Stay well.

Starting Small

Enough waiting - let's get this show on the road!

Everyone knows it's been a dry June and no one expects me to have the selection I should have in another few weeks.  Besides, I'm so anxious to put out my sign and meet some of my customers I don't think I could stand waiting much longer.  So, here's what I'll have out by 8:00 a.m. on Saturday June 30th:

Rhubarb:  $ 2.00 per pound
Oregano - $ 1.00 per large bunch
Mint - $ 1.00 per large bunch

Down, But Not Out

It's hard to understand why it's raining in Truro, raining in Pictou, raining in Canso, but it's as dry as a camel's hoof here in Cape George.  However, this is the hand I've been dealt, and I must work with what I have.  Of course my garden is suffering because of this extended lack of moisture, but I am not alone in this regard.

I have not given up.  I continue to nurture the plants that are still alive, even though they haven't grown very much in the past few weeks, and as soon as we do have some rain I'll re-seed as many vegetables as I can.  This is a challenging season, there's no doubt about that, but I am not abandoning my dream of creating a viable and productive mini-market to serve the communities around Cape George.

So be patient, keep checking back here for my opening day, and for those of you who purchased gift certificates at the Mini-Trail Community Auction in April, don't worry.  All certificates will be honoured.

As the classic rock group Chumbawumba sang in their anthem 'Tub Thumping' fifteen years ago:
     I get knocked down
     But I get up again.
Nothing's ever gonna keep me down.
Farming may not be in my blood, but it's in my heart, and I have the will to make this project work.  I just need a little cooperation from Mother Nature.

Waiting . . .

Shortly after I moved to Nova Scotia I heard someone say that farmers are always complaining about the weather; it's either too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry . . .  I laughed at the time, but now I'm paying for it.

So, despite the fact that the garden is planted (seeds and transplants), the tables are washed and ready, and my beautiful sign is painted and waiting to be inaugurated, opening day for Rose Cottage Garden is delayed until some time after we receive a healthy few days of rain.

As it stands, I am filling buckets from the waterfall behind Ballantyne's Cove wharf and driving it home, then carrying it down to the new plantings, carefully doling out 500 - 800 grams of water per plant per day in an attempt to keep everything alive  (if not actively growing)  until nature provides what we all need: additional moisture.

Please keep your eye on this blog for news of my opening day.  I apologize to everyone for the delay, and hope to be able to provide you with most of your fresh vegetable needs before too much longer.  Thank you for your patience.
